Do I need a visa to travel to Nepal?

In most cases, you will need a visa to travel to Nepal. The process depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. Visa on Arrival (VOA): Citizens of many countries, including most Western nations, can obtain a visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu or designated land border crossings. This is typically a tourist visa valid for 15, 30, or 90 days (depending on your chosen option). Visa Required in Advance: Nationals of some countries, such as Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Palestine, must obtain a visa from a Nepalese embassy or consulate before traveling to Nepal.

What is the process for obtaining a visa?

Visa on Arrival (VOA):

  • Fill out an Arrival Card: This form is usually provided on the plane or available at the airport.
  • Complete an online Tourist Visa form: You can do this beforehand on the Department of Immigration website or at a kiosk machine at the airport. This will generate a submission receipt with a barcode. Print it out if you completed it online.
  • Submit documents and pay the visa fee: At the immigration counter, present your printed receipt (if completing online), passport (valid for at least 6 months with blank pages), and two passport-sized photos. Pay the visa fee in Nepalese Rupees (NPR).

Visa Required in Advance:

  • Contact the nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate: Inquire about visa application procedures, required documents, and processing times.
  • Prepare the required documents: These typically include your passport, completed application form, photos, proof of travel insurance, and potentially proof of accommodation and onward travel.
  • Submit your application and fees: Pay the visa processing fee and submit your application package to the embassy or consulate.
  • Wait for processing: Processing times can vary, so factor this in when planning your trip. Collect your visa once approved.
  • What are the passport requirements for travel to Nepal? Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Nepal. This ensures your passport remains valid for the duration of your stay and potential delays.
