Langtang region is not a hidden place. Moreover, it's one of the closest trekking routes from Kathmandu. Suited north of Kathmandu, one can reach the starting point of the trek in just a few hours of comfortable drive. However, not many trekkers visit this region. 

The trail is adventurous, and the views are spectacular. Unlike other famous treks like EBC and ABC, the Langtang valley trek presents you with the lifestyle and culture of the indigenous community of Tamangs.

During the Langtang trek, you explore the Langtang National Park. Numerous flora and fauna reside in this park, including the Himalayan black bear, red panda, etc. The trail ascends through forests of bamboo & rhododendron. You cross many bridges over streams and rivers as well as pass by gorgeous waterfalls. 

Mountains & Culture

Langtang valley trek presents the rich cultural outlook of Tamangs and Sherpas. The locals here follow Buddhism and are somewhat influenced by Tibetan Buddhism too. The Tamangs especially are believed to be the descendants of Tibetans, so you can notice a lot of resemblances. Similarly, the trail has many stupas, monasteries, chortens, mani walls, and prayer wheels. 

While trekking, you'll see captivating sceneries that change after every village. The views of lush green hills and huge meadows backed by majestic snow-capped mountains are phenomenal. Himalayan giants like Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Dorje Lhakpa (6,966 m), Sishapangma (8,027 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Yara Peak (6,236 m), etc are some of the mountains you witness Langtang valley trek 10 days. 

Langtang Valley Trek route

The Langtang valley trek route begins at Syabrubesi (1,600 m). To reach here we take a 6 to 7 hours drive from Kathmandu. The trail from Syabrubesi descends to the Bhote Koshi river. Crossing a suspension bridge, we enter the Langtang valley. 

Further, walking through lush forests of rhododendron and bamboo, you reach Langtang village (3,430 m). The next stop from here is Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), and you hike to Tserko Ri (4,983 m) before retracing back to Lama Hotel (2,470 m). 

Difficulty

Langtang valley trek is also known as Langtang National Park Trek. In terms of strenuous climbing or technical uphill route, the Langtang trekking route is the easiest one in the Himalayas. This is a beginner-friendly trek. So, you can understand that the hurdles along the trails are not that challenging. 

With that being said, the Langtang valley trek does have its long ascents and descents with a few steep sections. You have to walk 5 to 7 hours a day. You'll have a wonderful time trekking in the Langtang region thanks to the subtle difficulty level & great trekking reward.

Altitude Sickness

If you don't know, altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness, is the illness one faces during the venture to higher elevations. It happens if your body fails to adjust to the elevation. Some early symptoms you should know are difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite, headache, insomnia, and nausea. 

The highest point of Langtang valley trekking is 4,983 metres (Tserko Ri). The elevation gain is huge during this trek, but you do not need to worry about altitude sickness because our Langtang trek itinerary has a gentle pace and acclimatisation days. 

Preparation

To prepare for the Langtang valley trek, all you have to do is, get your legs ready for a long walk. Your stamina is very important because of the long walk on rough trails. Go on frequent jogging and evening walks to build up the habit. Cardio exercise is best to prepare yourself for this trek.

Say hello to our airport representative upon landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You can find them with your name placard at the terminal gate. Today, we drive to Syabrubesi. From here, we begin trekking towards the Langtang region. The drive will be long and packed with beautiful scenery. We can see the Ganesh Himal range along the route.

From Syabrubesi, the trail descends to the Bhote Koshi river. We cross a thrilling suspension bridge and enter the Langtang valley. We continue trekking, following the Langtang river and walk via lush forests of bamboo & rhododendron. Further, we pass by a small settlement area, enjoying stunning views of Langtang II and Naya Kang.

The route ascends along a narrow track to the Langtang village. The trail is impressive today. We get to see superb mountain views on the way. As we wind through lush rhododendron forests and terraced fields, we may come across goats and yaks. Langtang is a fine mountain village resided by Tamangs.

The route to Kyanjin Gompa continues following the bank of the Langtang River. After a few ascend and descends, we reach Kyanjin Gompa, a small settlement area with an ancient monastery. From here, we get to see a breathtaking panorama of Langshisha and Dorje Lakpa.

We spend one more day in Kyanjin Gompa and explore the nearby areas. In the early morning, we hike to either Tserko Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m). Both places offer outstanding mountain landscapes. Later, we visit a local cheese factory and spend time interacting with locals.

After breakfast, we follow the same trail back to Lama Hotel. Descending along the Langtang river, we trek through rhododendron forests to Langtang village and Ghoda Tabela. Further, walking by a forested path, we reach Lama Hotel to spend the night.

Today, we begin trekking alongside the Langtang river once again and retrace the path back to Syabrubesi. The route offers excellent mountain views and passes by small villages. Before reaching Syabrubesi, we steeply ascend to a ridge above the Langtang river.

Our trek ends, and we drive back to Kathmandu. The drive will be comfortable and present soothing views of rivers, hills, and terraced fields. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we drop you at the hotel. Take your time to relax and unpack. We meet in the late evening over farewell dinner and end the day strolling on the vibrant streets of Thamel.

    Essential Info

    Best time

    Trekking to the Langtang region is best from March to April and October to November. Spring (March to April) is the season when the entire trail gets bloomed with a range of flowers and several other vegetation. Likewise, the chirping of birds along the route and the clear views of the mountains are spectacular. 

    Apart from spring, autumn (October to November) is another great time of the year to trek to Kyanjin Gompa. The weather remains stable, and the climate is moderate, like spring. The lower part of the trail is on the hot side. However, you can feel a refreshing hint of chillness in the winter. 

    If you like trekking in the winter season and want to witness stunning winter panorama, then we recommend you Langtang Valley trek in early December. You'll see light snowfall and breathtaking mountain views. 

    Accommodation

    Trekking in the Langtang region means guesthouse accommodation. You are more likely to spend nights in the local houses. Therefore, the experience is authentic. The rooms are decorated just like theirs with a double bed and a shared washroom. 

    Of course, the rooms will be small in size and give you a homely vibe. We reserve you the best guest house along the Langtang trekking route. The guesthouses do not offer many services, but you'll get to have a comfortable overnight stay. 

    Meals

    There are quite decent variations of food available in the Langtang region trek route. Most of the dishes are either Nepali or Tibetan. However, you'll still get a handful of western food options like a sandwich, pasta, steak, mashed potatoes, oats, muesli, etc. 

    The staple meal is dal bhat tarkari. It means rice and lentil soup with veggies and some other side dishes. It's the most delicious, affordable, filling, and nutritious option. You get all the crabs to keep your energy while trekking. 

    Group/private joining

    Langtang Valley Trek is not a strenuous trek. No doubt, you'll be trekking in a remote area where no basic healthcare facilities are available. However, the terrain is not that challenging, and one can do this trek without travel insurance. If you get travel insurance, you surely can travel more freely. Include emergency evacuation in your travel insurance.

      Langtang Valley Trek is an easy to moderate level trek in the Himalayas. The trail has a fair share of steep ascent and descent but not challenging as other famous treks. Anyone can do this trek without any previous trekking experience.

       

    • The Langtang trek ranges between 10 to 15 days. You can choose to do this trek short or long as per your time availability. We organize both short and long Langtang Valley Trek.

    • We recommend trekking with a guide, but you do not necessarily need to trek with a guide. You can figure out the route and may meet other fellow trekkers while trekking in the peak season. However, trekking alone may take the essence of learning things about the region and the locals. Moreover, arranging accommodation, permits, and other things may get a nuisance for you.

    • Yes, Langtang is safe to trek for all trekkers. The region is resided by the most welcoming community of Nepalese, so you'll always get help whenever you ask. Likewise, you do not have to worry about getting robbed or anything on the trail. However, you do have to be careful of the steep terrain and landslide-prone areas while trekking.
